Oscar Hernandez Murillo was an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in biology with a concentration in computational biology and a minor in chemistry. He worked in the lab from June 2014 to June 2017 and was in the University Scholars program during his junior year. He was awarded a RISE scholarship by the German Academic Exchange Service to study the kinetics of actin reorganization in cancer cell lines in the Institute of Cell Dynamics and Imaging in Muenster, Germany. Oscar also won a Spring 2017 Thermo Fisher Scientific Antibody Scholarship Award. His research in the Shorter Lab focused on engineering substrate-specific Hsp104 variants as a potential therapy for neurodegenerative diseases. During his free time, Oscar enjoys cooking, practicing his French, reading manga, and sharing fun facts about Ecuador, where he hails from. Oscar went on to pursue his Ph.D. at Harvard University.
